Model of slup "Hope"
The NADEZHDA frigate was built in 1800 in Russia and the first Russian
geographic expedition under the command of duke I.Kruzenstern took
place in 1803-1805 on the two ships NADEZHDA and the NEVA.
The round the world trip surpassed those of Cristopher Columbus,
Vasco da Gama, Francis Drake and F.Magellan in length and during
the expedition coasts of South America and Japan had been explored
and many Oceanic islands discovered. There was an artist named Semen
Kurliandtsev on board the NEVA who kept a diary and made a great
number of sketches during the expedition. This website displays
photos of some of the original sketches and drawings by S. Kurliandtsev.
This model was built by the Champion of Russia Àlexey Baranov
from Walnut, Pear and other exotic woods. Metal components were
made from brass and the sheathing of the hull from individual copper
plates. The construction was based on historically genuine ships'
plans, diaries, pictures from the expedition’s participants and
log books kept in the Central Naval Museum of St.Petersburg.
