Model of slup "Neva"
At the time of the Russian Emperor Alexander I there was a necessity
to protect Russia's Far East. N.Rezanov, the nobleman of the Tsar
court was appointed to carry out this mission and he handed the
responsibility of aquiring ships in England suitable for such an
objective to Y.Lisianskiy. Two ships named the Nadezhda (Hope) and
the Neva with a total displacement of 450 and 370 and with 16 and
14 guns were selected and were consequently brought back to St.Petersburg.
On July the 23rd of 1803 both ships under the command of I.Kruzenstern
and Y.Lisianskiy left Kronshtadt for the first Russian 'round the
world trip' that continued for 3 years. During that expedition much
important scientific and geographical research ws conducted rather
successfully - including the discovery of a number of Polynesian
islands none of which Europeans had set foot upon before. During
this period an attempt was also made to establish diplomatic relations
with Japan.
The model of the NEVA sloop was made in 2004 year by master model
ship builder Àlexei Baranov
from Walnut, Pear, Ebony and other other precious woods. Metals
used include brass, steel and silver and the fabrics are made from
percale.
